EGREMONT — Election fever is sweeping the county as towns gear up for the annual balloting in May, and Robert E. Miller, 90, of North Egremont is not immune. Miller will seek a three-year term as constable to complete 50 years in police work. The crusty Yankee farmer is reportedly the oldest constable in the state. Like his father, who also served as town constable, Miller was born on the family dairy farm on Egremont Plain Road.

My cellular life began inside my grandmother. This is one of my favorite reproductive facts, which I find very mystical and enchanting. Because baby girls are born with all the eggs they’ll ever have, my mom’s mom carried the cells that produced me. When my mom was in my grandmother’s womb, she got busy creating the egg that would become me. Maybe it’s not wild to other people, but this tidbit of feminine biology is wild and special to me.

Call it nesting, call it the new year, but I’m beginning 2024 with a great deal of renewed fervor for housekeeping. A few notes in the home digest:But I still want to learn how to sew with a machine, in a very rudimentary way. I spent a good part of a Saturday trying to learn how to use a sewing machine, recently given to me by a friend. Reader, rarely have I felt so stupid and incompetent. I watched ten to twelve (very unhelpful) YouTube tutorials and I am still doing it wrong, somehow.
