Fresh off a successful soccer season and gearing up for volleyball, she and her family were working out at a local gym when her life changed in an instant. "We just finished our sprints and we went on to the next exercise, and then I collapsed in the middle of it," Mary Sarah recalled. Without warning, Mary Sarah's heart stopped. "Just went down," said her mom, Karis Hanna.

"He went through the struggles of the NICU — every struggle that could be thrown at him," said Dr. Colby Day, medical director of the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit. Born at 25 weeks, weighing just 1 pound, 6 ounces, Levi faced an uphill battle from the start.

Her mother, Alex Walker, said like other babies her age, Kennedy is always on the move, taking swim classes, dancing and playing with the family dog. But her first few weeks of life looked very different. Her story began nine months ago, when Alex's water broke when she was just 29 weeks pregnant.

So when Sabrina Leavens got the call that her son, Cody, "May" have broken his at an after-school program, she figured the Thanksgiving holiday, which was just days away, might be a little less cheerful. "I figured he'd just be sitting there holding his arm when I got there, but that wasn't the case," Sabrina recalled. When Sabrina arrived, she saw every mother's worst fear.
