Julie Haymes says Quilting Adventures is a welcoming environment for every kind of crafter. That’s why her shop is quilt to last. Haymes, 57, grew up in a crafty household. Her mother sewed her childhood clothes and introduced her to all different types of arts and crafts. Visiting fabric stores is one of Haymes’ first memories. “I just remember loving the colors and the fabrics and running my hands along them. . . even from being in a stroller,” Haymes said.

The local owner of Preau Leather Goods & Accessories is passionate about crafting one-of-a-kind pieces for customers to enjoy for a lifetime. Grier has been an artist for as long as she can remember. The grade school art enthusiast eventually evolved into a passion-fueled business woman, but her path to professional leatherwork took time. It all began when she made a faux leather notebook cover as a gift for a friend.

There’s a whole lot of love surrounding Lovell’s 31. And owner Wilma Kidd hopes you taste it with every bite of her gourmet bread pudding. Kidd’s love for bread pudding was born out of childhood trips to Old Country Buffet after church. Kidd loved its version of the treat so much, the 69-year-old Henrico County local grew up determined to make her own. After lots of encouragement from her family, Kidd created Lovell’s 31.

Dean, and she answers right on cue: “To limit the barriers to having fun in the home.” Her company does just that, with a long history of happy customers to back it up. With about 14,000 square feet of retail space in its Henrico showroom, C.P. Dean has a lot to offer – especially if you check out the store, in person. “Our website is one tiny portion of what our retail store looks like,” said Ball, C.P. Dean’s president.

Riqia Taylor is determined to amplify Black narratives. So determined, in fact, the 28 year old created Insomnia Book Company – a business that goes beyond book sales to champion her cause. Undergraduate school at VCU was a transformational time for Taylor. She majored in African-American studies and graduated in 2018 with quite a collection of Black literature and a love for bookstores.

Birdsong’s Secret Garden is more than a business to Tonya Birdsong Chavis. It’s a “healing journey” – one she strives to share with the community. Chavis, like all of us, is made of multitudes. She is an artist, a giver and a business and marketing teacher at John Marshall High School. But Chavis is also a domestic violence survivor. She first opened Birdsong's Secret Garden in 2022 as a way to find solace and joy after her trauma.
