Unilever has acquired men’s personal care brand Dr Squatch from Summit Partners, as a move to strengthen its portfolio of high-end personal care and beauty products. The acquisition was made for an undisclosed sum and is expected to be complete in the latter half of the year. Dr Squatch was founded as a direct to consumer (DTC) brand in 2013. It offers a range of personal care products, including soaps, body washes, deodorants, hair care, skin care and other men’s grooming products.

Warmer temperatures led to lower retail footfall over last weekend as shoppers shifted towards coastal areas and outdoor spaces amid the heatwave according to data from MRI Software. Footfall in retail parks and shopping centres went down by 1.3% and 1.5% respectively due to increased temperatures and changing weather across the UK in the last week.

UK households are slowing down their spending amid the cost-of-living crisis. May marks the fifth consecutive month of decreased spending power growth, according to figures from the Asda Income Tracker. In May, overall discretionary income increased year-on-year by 3.5% to £9.19 per week, marking the third consecutive month of annual growth remaining below double digits. However, discretionary income dropped by 4.5% month-on-month from April.

Sainsbury’s saw its sales rise as warmer temperatures drove increased consumer demand for summer products. According to Kantar figures, the supermarket retailer reported a 4.7% increase in sales over a 12-week period to 18 May, fuelled by purchases of summer goods. Data from The Times also revealed that demand for seasonal staple products, including ice cream, bags of ice, barbecue meat and rosé wine, skyrocketed over the period between 8 and 14 June.

Craft beer company BrewDog is tapping into the trend of reduced alcohol consumption by introducing a lower-alcohol-by-volume version of its popular Hazy Jane beer. The new Baby Hazy drink is now available on Sainsbury’s shelves, and also on the company’s e-commerce platform and at BrewDog bars. The new beer comes in 3% ABV with Krush, Talus, and Citra versions available.
