Niger State Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) is seeking the amendment of the state local government election law, which provided for candidates to pay administrative charges. The position of IPAC was coming on the heels of N300,000 charges for local government chairmanship seats and N100,000 for councillorship candidates. The chairman of IPAC, Hon Mohammed Bello Maikujeri, made the council’s position known at a news conference over the weekend in Minna.

The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has announced the discoveries of more dead bodies under a bridge bringing the death toll to 153 in the Mokwa Flood. The director general of NSEMA, Abdullahi Baba Arah, disclosed this yesterday while giving the daily update on the Disaster. He said, “Two more dead bodies were recovered late yesterday (Saturday) under the bridge.

Survivors of Wednesday’s devastating flood in Tiffin Maza and Angwan Hausawa of Mokwa and Rabba towns have narrated their narrow escape from the disaster. They also spoke about their ordeals, pain, losses and fears to LEADERSHIP Sunday. They expressed fear of a possible outbreak of an epidemic as the stench from some decomposing bodies filled their communities. One of the most disturbed residents is Mallam Hassan Yusuf who operates an Islamic school in the area.

The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (N-SEMA) has released an update on the flood disaster in Mokwa local government area of the State with 151 persons confirmed dead. The agency in the updated report also indicated that 11 persons were injured while 503 households were affected. The director-general of the Agency, Abdullahi Baba Arah, said over 3,018 residents were displaced from three communities affected, while two bridges and two roads were submerged by water. About 117 bodies have been recovered and given mass burial at the Mokwa burial ground following the devastating flood at Kpege area of Mokwa in Niger State on Thursday. Our correspondent gathered yesterday that apart from 40 Islamiya pupils’ bodies recovered from Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa in Mokwa town, the surrounding villages of Ya Gbagba and Raba were affected and bodies of some villagers were washed down to Mokwa.
