ConsumptionIn 2021, natural gas consumption increased by 191.9 billion cubic metres (bcm), or 5.3 per cent. The share of gas as a primary energy source remained unchanged from the previous year at 24 per cent. Rises in gas demand were led by Brazil (+9 bcm) and Iran (+6.8 bcm), with China (+42.1 bcm) and Russia (+51.1 bcm) contributing the largest increases. Inter-regional gas trade grew by 8.5 per cent, largely accounted for by a 51.5 bcm (11.6 per cent) drop in pipeline trade.
