On Dec. 2, 1859, the Commonwealth of Virginia executed John Brown. Brown had been convicted of multiple murders, treason against Virginia, and inciting a slave revolt in relation to his raid on an armory in Harpers Ferry. John Brown was an abolitionist who hated the injustice of slavery. He asserted human equality as a Christian principle to be followed by all who feared God. Brown also believed peaceful efforts at combating slavery had failed. He chose violence.

On Sunday, President Joe Biden announced that he had granted a “full and unconditional” pardon to his son, Hunter Biden. This announcement wiped away one conviction for Hunter Biden and extricated him from other legal troubles. It also contradicted past statements by the president that he would not issue such a pardon. I should state up front that the president’s pardon of his son resides perfectly within his presidential authority. The Constitution gives the president alone this power.
