Gavin Newsom signed a bill Monday banning admission based on legacy and donor preferences at California’s private, nonprofit colleges and universities. Assembly Bill 1780, sponsored by Assemblymember Phil Ting (D-San Francisco) prohibits private, nonprofit institutions from considering these factors in the admissions process. These factors have long been banned from consideration at California’s public colleges and universities.
