I think most parents would like to believe that we understand our kids. That we “get” them and recognize the forces shaping their lives. They may think we don’t, as lots of rolled eyes would sarcastically imply. But—speaking for me as a dad, at least—I like to believe I’m not as clueless as my three teens may sometimes think I am. But sometimes I have a moment of realization that things really are different.

Last week, I had the privilege of heading to New York City for the premiere of Lionsgate and Kingdom Story’s new movie The Unbreakable Boy. At the most literal level, it’s about a boy who’s anything but unbreakable. Thirteen-year-old Austin suffers from Brittle Bone Disease, and he’s endured dozens of breaks in his young life. On top of that, Austin is on the autism spectrum. You might think that would be enough to capsize him emotionally. But not Austin.

In the last several years, artificial intelligence has gone from being a fringe, vaguely science-fiction-y possibility to a tool that can be used for virtually any task involving the synthesis of information. And frankly, synthesis isn’t even a big enough word to encompass how this rapidly advancing and adapting technology can repackage ideas, information and images.

What? Gen Z has a new love affair … with old technology. Just as vinyl records have enjoyed a resurgence, so Gen Z has now decided 2000s-era digital cameras are cool again. So What? NPR reports that these cameras’ images have a more vintage vibe that appeals to Gen Z. Some young users also say that the camera’s limited storage capacity makes them more mindful of capturing significant images. Others report feeling a sense of security that their photos aren’t as easily hackable.
