Thousands of low-income D.C. residents will soon see their medical debt erased. The District of Columbia is wiping nearly $42 million in debt from the books at local hospitals, the mayor's office said. Mayor Muriel Bowser's office announced Friday morning that the D.C. government is paying off the debt - buying it for pennies on the dollar and forgiving it. The plan is expected to cost taxpayers less than $225,000, officials said. It's funded by an expected surplus from the 2023 fiscal year budget.

Developer Forum is planning to densify more of its commercial and retail properties across Canada by adding residential units to the sites. Its latest such development, in partnership with Axxys Construction, is the first phase of the Lustra rental condo project in Terrebonne, Que., at the Promenades Terrebonne. Lustra will be a three-phase project with just over 250 units in all-concrete buildings. Work is already underway on the first phase at the site.

Despite what some tenants are hearing from some news outlets, Montreal’s office market is far from flatlining. That’s what Meggie Bergevin, senior associate at Cushman & Wakefield, told attendees at a session on the city’s office market during the Montreal Real Estate Forum, held June 6 at the city’s convention centre. Bergevin said “there’s a message out there that we need to correct” about the office market’s alleged mortality. “Well, the office market is not dead,” she said.

A few weeks ago, Metropia CEO and founder Howard Sokolowski told RENX he believed Phase 1 of the developer's Union City master-planned community in Markham, Ont. would sell quickly. He was right. Metropia sold over 400 units (95 per cent) in the 440-suite condo tower in the first three days of sales. The launch of the 12-acre, mixed-use Union City community was for its first major component, a 40-storey residential condominium and a 5,000-square-foot social hub known as Union House.

This dramatic growth signals several opportunities for the national commercial real estate market. StatsCan said our population grew by 1.05 million to 39.57 million in 2022 and most of that growth (96 per cent) was due to international immigration.
