The Tasmanian government has revealed a $45 million blowout in the cost of building a new AFL high performance centre for the Tasmania Devils. The construction of the team's training and administrative headquarters was one of the AFL's key requirements when it agreed to allow a Tasmanian side into the competition. The project was initially priced at $70 million, with Kingston selected ahead of Rosny as the preferred location late last year. But the project is now estimated to cost $115 million.

Over the nearly 80-year history of the Sydney to Hobart yacht race, 13 competitors have lost their lives. Until Friday morning's deaths of two sailors in separate incidents, the most recent tragedies had been in 1998. In that disastrous race, six sailors died, five yachts sank, and more than 60 retired. Veteran sailor John Stanley was one of the 55 competitors rescued by helicopter during the 1998 race.

Onboard Sydney to Hobart racer Wild Thing 100, skipper Grant Wharington painted a vivid picture of the weather conditions. In a video posted to social media on Friday morning, Mr Wharington said it was "pretty uncomfortable out here". "Bouncing off plenty of waves, very noisy," he said. "Almost impossible to get to the bathroom, people in bunks trying to get to sleep but no one can get any sleep."Friday morning was a tragic one for the Sydney to Hobart.
