The Red Sox and the Angels will play the middle contest of their three-game series Tuesday night at Fenway Park. Alex Cora will roll out a lineup very similar to the starting nine used Monday when Boston nearly erased a six-run deficit against Los Angeles. The only swap will be Connor Wong replacing Carlos Narváez behind the dish, which means Marcelo Mayer will sit out a second consecutive game after playing eight straight upon his promotion to the big leagues.

The Red Sox and the Brewers will wrap up their three-game series Wednesday afternoon at American Family Field. Marcelo Mayer will experience another big league first in the matinee matchup. After batting sixth in each of his first four games with Boston, the 22-year-old will bat cleanup in the finale in Milwaukee. It was a deserved elevation for Mayer, who collected a combined five hits in his last three games.

As a first-week big leaguer, it only was a matter of time before top Red Sox prospect Marcelo Mayer made a mistake on the diamond. That mental lapse arrived Tuesday night, and it proved to be very costly in yet another frustrating Boston loss. Mayer was the only Red Sox player to log multiple hits in the visitors’ middle game against the Brewers. The first knock was logged in the fifth inning when the 22-year-old led off the frame with a double in a 0-0 ballgame.

It might not be much longer until the Red Sox’s “big three” prospects are reunited in Boston. Kristian Campbell, of course, cracked Alex Cora’s Opening Day roster, and Marcelo Mayer was called up to the big leagues last Saturday. While Mayer certainly earned his promotion, it also was made in part because Alex Bregman went down with a “severe” quad injury. If you ask MassLive’s Chris Cotillo, Roman Anthony’s eventual call-up will be far less about depth and much more about trying to find a spark.

Rob Refsnyder has been around the big leagues long enough to know the Red Sox aren’t in a position to feel sorry for themselves. That isn’t to say any potential complaints coming out of Boston’s clubhouse wouldn’t be warranted. The Red Sox already have dealt with a slew of injuries to key players, and luck hasn’t been anywhere near Boston’s side.
