The Rugby Panthers fell two games short of making a repeat trip to the girls state basketball tournament, falling in the Division, Region 3 third-place game to Turtle Mountain Bravettes, 40-35. The Bravettes outscored the Panthers 12-1 in the second quarter to take control of the game, and then were forced to withstand a furious comeback in the second half to advance.

BISMARCK — The Bottineau-Ruby boys’ hockey team wrapped up its season at the West Region tournament last week, with a win in the play-in game, before dropping its quarterfinal and consolation bracket games to finish its season at 9-13-0-2 overall and 4-13-2 in WDA play. No. 8 Bottineau-Rugby 7, No. 8 Hazen-Beulah 3Hazen-Beulah opened the scoring when Grant Krause found the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead. It didn’t take long for the Braves to answer though.

BOTTINEAU — Khaliel Abdurrahman scored an unassisted goal two-and-a-half minutes into the third period for Bottineau-Rugby, but it wasn’t enough to overcome four goals from Minot High, as the Magicians defeated the Braves 4-1 in boys’ hockey action on Tuesday night. With the win, the Magi picked up six points in the WDA standings. Mackley Morelli opened the scoring 7:21 into the first period with the first of his two unassisted goals to give Minot a 1-0 lead.

Last season, the Rugby Panthers’ girls basketball team knocked off the Our Redeemer’s Christian School Knights in the Region 6 championship game to advance to the state tournament. On Thursday, the Panthers fell just short of winning the rematch, as Katie Sullivan’s potential game-winning basket came just after the buzzer and Our Redeemer’s held on for the 42-41 win.

The Bottineau-Rugby boys’ hockey team opened its season with a 5-4 win over Devils Lake on Nov. 21, before dropping a pair of games to start December. In the Devils Lake game, Bottineau-Rugby got two goals from Khaliel Abdurrahman, and a goal apiece from Brooks Siemens, Bryant Bohl and Peyton Getzlaff. Cooper Beckman, Tukker Fedje and Will Demontigny all registered assists for the team, Bottineau-Rugby jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first period on Siemens’ goal.
