PORTAGE COUNTY, Wis. (WAOW) -- Portage County residents have a chance to provide feedback on the county's current bicycle and walking conditions. There are two public workshops scheduled in January. The first is set for January 15 at Mid-State Technical College at 1001 Centerpoint Dr. in Stevens Point. The second is the next day, January 16, at the Jansen Community Center at 487 North Main St. in Amherst. Both run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.Residents can also submit feedback online through January 31.

WAUSAU, Wis. (WAOW) -- University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point has a new Chief of Police and Security Services. In a release, the university says Michele Haywood was sworn in on Monday, Jan. 6. Haywood retired from the Milwaukee Police Department in 2022 after 27 years of service. The university says she completed advanced training in Active Bystandership for Law Enforcement, and at the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy.

WAUSAU, Wis. (WAOW) -- January is National Radon Action Month, and health officials urge all homeowners, schools and property owners to test for the gas. In a release, the Oneida County Health Department says one in 10 homes has elevated radon levels in Wisconsin. They say fortunately, it's easy to detect, and leaks can be fixed. While radon can affect anyone, the health department says children are especially vulnerable to exposure because of their faster breathing and smaller lungs.
