I support use of drones in journalism. I was all over LAPD, LA City Attorney, and Mayor about wrongful arrests of drone operators earlier this year. So as one of the biggest drone advocates in Los Angeles, let me be clear: NEVER FLY DRONES IN A WILDFIRE. YOU WILL KILL PEOPLE.

Practical example for journalists: You are allowed past wildfire closures per California Penal Code 409.5(d)(1) Bill Hader is NOT allowed through, and you can’t help him or other non-press get in per newly enacted PC 409.5(2) Sorry, love ya Bill! Thanks for keeping it light!

PSA: Thieves know cars in Los Angeles are packed with valuables right now. If evacuating from fires, keep your true essentials (medicines, etc.) in a go bag that stays inside with you, never leave in car. "Looting" is rare, but petty smash-and-grab could be a concern.

Personal update: Still OK in Venice Beach. Miles from likely evac zones. Fortunate to be steps from safety on huge beach that can’t burn. (The one scary disaster risk here? Tsunami.) Extended family all safe, but four households (nieces/cousins) evacuated due to different fires.

Journalist friends in LA: 1. Should go without saying, but put your safety first. Plenty of footage/photos of fire already exist. Don't push your limits. This is literally "die in a fire." 2. If you need PPE sold out locally, I know someone flying in very soon. Hit me up ASAP.
