No Bucs rookie has garnered as much buzz since joining the team as safety Shilo Sanders. That is what comes with being Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders’ son. The young Sanders went undrafted, but that has not stopped him from generating headlines as he vies for a spot in Tampa Bay’s secondary. Last week’s rookie mini-camp was the first chance to hear from him and see him in action, and he is prepared to work and grow from the opportunity that has presented itself.

It was not expected that the Bucs would draft a wide receiver in the first round, much less select two wide receivers in the 2025 NFL Draft. After taking Emeka Egbuka with the 19th overall pick, Tampa Bay then took Tez Johnson with the 235th. Johnson proclaimed upon being drafted that he would be the team’s starting punt returner, and he will look to make an impact with whatever opportunities he has ahead of him. He will also have the chance to reunite with running back Bucky Irving.

While Floridians are used to the 90-degree heat and mostly sunny days, many of the Bucs’ rookies experienced it for the first time during Friday afternoon’s rookie mini-camp practice. While head coach Todd Bowles joked afterward that there were some close “casualties,” players came out pretty unscathed heat-wise. Rookie mini-camp offers the first look at the team’s draft picks as well as those trying out to earn a roster spot.

With the Bucs hosting rookie mini-camp on Friday and Saturday, all eyes will be on Tampa Bay’s draft picks as they don the red and pewter for the first time in their new jersey numbers. General manager Jason Licht is excited to see them, but they are not the only rookies in town. Plenty of undrafted rookies who have signed and many more trying out will be out there as well, and Licht views them as being just as important.
