A mouth-watering prospect if I have there is ever one - if your a Man City fan or Mario Balotelli. The Villa have had a good start to the season. Unbeaten no less. Well in the league anyway. But we have not played a top six team yet.

I can't be bothered to go down the Villa today. I will go, I'm looking forward to seeing my mates, in the pub before and after, but the actual going to the game I could take it or leave it. I've lost my season ticket again, I left it in the Crown and Cushion a few weeks ago and forgot to ask for it back after some kind patron but it behind the bar. When I did ask for it on Thursday night, they couldn't find it, they probably threw away after it made the beer go stale. Not wanting to go the game?

AS SURE as Aston Villa Football Club will let you down as soon as you believe in them the Villa boys will surprise you when you least expect it. And boy did Villa fans need a pick-me-up, stuck in the Premiership middle lane with car that doesn't work and a driver that fans cant stand is no fun. But beating Chelsea away made me fall in love with football again.

Four games into the Premiership season and the Villa are unbeaten and in the mixer for The Race For Seventh. The fixture list did us a massive favour by steering our team away from them nasty billionaire sides who are obviously head and shoulders above of everyone else. The fans would already be screaming for Alex McLeish’s head if we were hammered by ManYoo at home 5-0 like our Race For Seventh challengers Bolton. But as it is I don’t see how we can slate our manager. He’s unbeaten.

As sure as a hang over follows the Christmas do Manchester United usually beat in the bleak midwinter. And what a bleak midwinter this looks to be for our fine old club.

A good day was had by all in the West Country, especially for the police whose officers must have made a packet in overtime. The treated Villa v Rovers like it was a Rangers Celtic game after both sets of fans had occupied a whisky distillery for a week.

I once asked David O’Leary why his record was so poor in local derbies and when did he think he would get one over on Steve Bruce. In his arrogant way he said: “My record in derbies is good, my lads beat Wolves 4-0 - away.” I laughed so hard I got thrown out of the press conference. Wolves isn’t a derby which anyone cares about. Everyone knows that. Maybe in the old days when we used to play each other every Boxing Day it might have meant something but not now.

Can I just use this opportunity to apologise for last week’s outbreak of optimism after watching the Chelsea game. It wont happen again. It only took six minutes against Swansea for Disaster Zone Warnock to undo all the good work in London and give away a goal. The entire team immediately a got bigger case of nerves than when Gabby gets a letter from the CSA and we are back to square one.
