The Edmonton Oilers’ outlook was bleak. They were staring down a 3-0 series deficit in Round 1 before Los Angeles Kings coach Jim Hiller’s failed challenge gave them a lifeline. That come-from-behind win rescued the Oilers’ season, and now they cannot be stopped. By rallying to defeat the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 1 on Tuesday, Edmonton became the first team in NHL history to record five consecutive comeback wins in one post-season.

The Toronto Maple Leafs’ reward for reaching the second round of the playoffs is a date with the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers, who made quick work of the Tampa Bay Lightning in Round 1. Florida’s five-game defeat of Tampa Bay was so decisive that Lightning coach Jon Cooper ceded control of the Sunshine State. “It was our turn,” Cooper told reporters.

Moments after letting in his fifth goal Sunday afternoon, Connor Hellebuyck drifted toward the Winnipeg Jets’ bench. Teammates offered supportive stick taps to his leg pads, knowing they could have done more to help. He patted partner Eric Comrie on the back before putting down his gear and taking a seat for the remainder of the St. Louis Blues’ series-tying win. Hellebuyck’s early exits have become a familiar sight over the Jets’ past two playoff runs.

Call it the Stuart Skinner conundrum. Edmonton Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch pulled Skinner after the starting goaltender allowed five goals on 28 shots in the team’s 6-2 loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday. It came two days after Skinner surrendered six goals on 30 shots, including a knuckler off the stick of Phillip Danault that halted the Oilers’ comeback bid in the final minute.

Thirty-eight seconds. That is all the time the Toronto Maple Leafs have needed to score their four power play goals against the Ottawa Senators. It’s a good thing, too, because the Maple Leafs have not asserted their dominance otherwise through two games of the first round. Toronto’s 4-for-7 start (57.1 per cent) on the power play is a major reason why the team has its first 2-0 series lead since 2002. The Maple Leafs have required no more than 18 seconds to convert on the power play in the series.

Mikko Rantanen has factored on each of his team’s last 12 goals, which marks the longest streak by a player in Stanley Cup Playoffs history. Rantanen entered play tied with Mario Lemieux, who had a point of nine straight playoff goals with the 1992 Penguins.

Mikko Rantanen became the first player in nearly 40 years with a hat trick in consecutive playoff games and third in NHL history, following Jari Kurri (Game 5-6 of 1985 CF) and Doug Bentley (Game 4-5 of 1944 SF).
