Pastor Mark Hilbelink said he learned about the lawsuit targeting his church’s homeless ministry when a reporter called him to ask about it. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued Sunrise Homeless Navigation Center last week under a local nuisance law and asked a federal court for a temporary injunction to close the ministry, which is affiliated with Sunrise Community Church.

Earlier this month, Oklahoma announced a pilot program to transfer illegal immigrants who have committed crimes out of state prisons and into U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody quickly once President-elect Donald Trump takes office. Public Safety Commissioner Tim Tipton, whom Gov. Kevin Stitt tapped to spearhead the program, told WORLD that more than 500 illegal immigrants are behind bars in Oklahoma state facilities.

For the first time, he felt comfortable in his own skin. The more he tried, the more he felt accepted by his peers. Alcohol and marijuana laid the groundwork for experimenting with cocaine and pills. Then, he met a girl.

After Jason Wise’s cousin died from a heroin overdose in 2021, Wise wished he could die the same way. While addicted to heroin, pain pills, and other substances, Wise had overdosed about 25 times. But this time, he didn’t want to wake up. “I went and got the same drugs that [had] just killed my cousin, and my intention was to overdose,” he said. He took the drugs on a baseball field in Albemarle, N.C. The friends he was with left him there, unresponsive.

Carrie Bearden supervises a clinic for 12- to 25-year-olds showing signs of schizophrenia and other severe mental illnesses. In recent years, she’s noticed a growing number of her young patients are also regular cannabis users. Recreational marijuana use is legal in California. “The prevalence and frequency of use has increased over time,” said Bearden, who is a clinical psychologist and teaches at UCLA.
