Guest conductor Jeri Lynne Johnson brought out energy and passion from the Thornton Chamber Orchestra on Friday night. The Bovard Auditorium was flooded with classical sounds as the ensemble performed with precision and artistry, consistently playing in unison and giving depth to the music. The concert showcased three pieces: “Source Code” by Jessie Montgomery, “Le Tambeau de Couperin” by Maurice Ravel and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8.

Located slightly west of downtown Guadalajara, Mexico, the statue of Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom and strategic warfare, stands in the middle of a roundabout with a spear and a shield. The statue inspired Thornton School of Music professor Juan-Pablo Contreras to compose “La Minerva.” The third movement of the violin concerto, “Himno A La Mujer,” has landed him his third Latin Grammy nomination.

Red and orange stage lights illuminated the USC Thornton Afro-Latin American Jazz Ensemble as they brought the sounds of Cuba and Puerto Rico to Carson Soundstage Monday night. What began as a showcase of jazz music from students at the Thornton School of Music quickly changed course, as salsa melodies got the audience out of their seats and dancing together.
