Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infection is a serious disease primarily caused by M. avium and M. intracellulare. In recent years, the number of patients infected with MAC has surpassed that infected with tuberculosis.1, 2, 3 Antimicrobial agents, such as clarithromycin, rifampicin, and ethambutol, are typically used to treat MAC infections; however, their therapeutic efficacy is limited and long-term use (longer than one year) is required.
