    Pune: The sighting of a leopard, near Pune airport's runway, may be the result of what's known as dispersal, when animals begin to move away from known habitats to look for resources, wildlife experts told TOI on Tuesday. In Pune district, the known habitats are Junnar and Shirur and the experts said the leopard populations there have reached critical levels, which means the big cats may now be dispersing to urban centres of Alandi, Chakan and even Lohegaon, in search of food and territory.

    Mumbai: The turtle, which was tagged in Odisha on the eastern coast and was found nesting on the western Konkan coast, has flipped the theory researchers had that the nesting populations for both coasts were different, with no interconnection, as the turtles show high fidelity to their nesting sites. Dr Basudev Tripathy, senior scientist of Zoological Survey of India (ZSI), told TOI: "In 2021, our team of ZSI researchers metal-tagged over 12,000 Olive Ridley turtles at Gahirmatha beach in Odisha.
