In the past quarter century or so, New Marathi Cinema has come to be enriched by important contributions from several young directors, including Mumbai-based Chaitanya Tamhane. Tamhane’s debut film, Court, won the Swarna Kamal in 2013. Tamhane was then only 29 years of age, weaned more on theatre than any other art form. Yet, strikingly, even whilst occasionally reminding the viewer of the director’s preoccupation with theatre, Court is never burdened with any trace of theatricality.

Ashok Rane’s documentary film ‘Aankhi Ek Mohenjo Daro’ (Yet Another Mohenjo Daro) on the cultural life of textile mill workers of Girgangaon in Mumbai is a very important document . It won the best film award in the historical film category in the national film awards announced in Delhi last week and it was screened at a packed Y.B. Chavan centre auditorium in Mumbai last evening.

Can Kharij (The Case is Closed, 1982), one of the several memorable films that immediately come to mind whenever Mrinal Sen’s name is mentioned, be said to be a “hunger film”? Yes, it can be designated thus, for, in a certain invisible way, the film is open to being analysed about the spectre of hunger affecting the lives of an unfortunate father and his doomed little son and, by extension, the lives of generations of deprived people like them.
