In the past quarter century or so, New Marathi Cinema has come to be enriched by important contributions from several young directors, including Mumbai-based Chaitanya Tamhane. Tamhane’s debut film, Court, won the Swarna Kamal in 2013. Tamhane was then only 29 years of age, weaned more on theatre than any other art form. Yet, strikingly, even whilst occasionally reminding the viewer of the director’s preoccupation with theatre, Court is never burdened with any trace of theatricality.

Ashok Rane’s documentary film ‘Aankhi Ek Mohenjo Daro’ (Yet Another Mohenjo Daro) on the cultural life of textile mill workers of Girgangaon in Mumbai is a very important document . It won the best film award in the historical film category in the national film awards announced in Delhi last week and it was screened at a packed Y.B. Chavan centre auditorium in Mumbai last evening.

Can Kharij (The Case is Closed, 1982), one of the several memorable films that immediately come to mind whenever Mrinal Sen’s name is mentioned, be said to be a “hunger film”? Yes, it can be designated thus, for, in a certain invisible way, the film is open to being analysed about the spectre of hunger affecting the lives of an unfortunate father and his doomed little son and, by extension, the lives of generations of deprived people like them.

Paresh Mokashi’s Marathi film Nach Ga Ghuma is very good as was expected from the reputed maker of Harischandrachi Factory which was the Indian nomination for Oscars.. It is very inventive both in form and content. The most important aspect which is generally likely to be missed is its remarkable understanding, portrayal of Labour, labour-employee relations.

We, a few comrades of Delhi, used to organize an annual program in the memory of Allah Baksh under the auspices of Samajwadi Manch. On the suggestion of Anil Nauria, the first program was organized in Queen’s Park (opposite New Delhi Railway Station) in 1995 or 96. There was a special reason for this. When the Muslim League passed the Pakistan Resolution in March 1940, Allah Baksh, who was the Premier of Sindh province, organized an anti-partition conference in the same Queen’s Park in April 1940.

Films are a very powerful medium which create a social understanding in various ways. Till decades ago we had films which reflected social realities and promoted progressive values. The films like ‘Mother India’, ‘Do Bigha Jameen’ and ‘Naya Daur’ are just a few of these. Some biopic films have also contributed a lot in disseminating social common sense, which are close to reality and promote inclusive values. Attenborough’s Gandhi and Bhagat Singh were greatly inspiring.
