1 INTRODUCTION Fine sediment (inorganic and organic particles <2 mm in diameter) plays a fundamental role in freshwater systems. This includes in their hydrogeomorphic cycles, habitat heterogeneity and for the delivery of nutrients, dissolved organic matter and contaminants such as microplastics and heavy metals (Chon et al., 2012; He et al., 2021; Owens et al., 2005; Westrich & Förstner, 2007).
