Stroot won the 100-, 200- and 400-meter runs at the Class 1A Kewanee Wethersfield sectional, qualifying for the state meet, scheduled for May 29-31 (Thursday through Saturday) in Charleston.

At 30, with successful stops already at Lincoln College, Columbia College in Missouri, and, most recently, McKendree University, Mathews seemed close to paying off all his dues to get to the next level.
