    Ransomware attacks are on the decline, and are being replaced by data exfiltration, says an expert local digital forensics auditor. Professor Danny Myburgh, MD of Cyanre, speaking to ITWeb TV, said his company is called to handle 40 to 60 major breaches of large South African companies every year and has noted a decrease in ransomware in recent months. This, he surmised, is due to companies adopting better backup and recovery strategies, including air-gapping.

    Many organisations are struggling with adopting generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), but one business already well on that journey is Vodacom. Originally launched as an SMS channel, the chatbot TOBi was one of Vodacom’s first public-facing examples of the use of machine learning to look for certain keywords and then help customers get answers to basic questions. Today, SuperTOBi, as it’s now called, uses GenAI to get a better sense of the customers’ demands.

    MTN Group has released a trading statement for the year ended 31 December 2024, and despite claiming a ‘strong underlying performance’, shareholders have been warned that earnings will be significantly depressed. The statement outlines that when the FY 24 financial results are released in mid 17 March 2025, the group is expecting to report a decline in earnings per share (EPS) from FY 2023, which exceeds 100%. It also forecasts a drop in headline earnings per share (HEPS) of between -79% and -59%.
