At a January 7 meeting, local business leaders, including former chamber president Jeri McMahan, agreed to sign off on necessary forms that could kickstart the process of reestablishing the group that advocates for the mountain’s business community, according to Lori Cabantoy of Mt. Hood Oregon Resort.

    The Sandy, Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles office has reopened in a limited capacity after being closed for nearly two years. The office will be open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation. The Sandy office was among a group of offices statewide that were shuttered in 2022 due to staffing shortages and is the last one to reopen, according to officials.

    About a thousand patients served by Adventist Medical Group Hoodland Clinic must look for primary and urgent medical care elsewhere following the closure of the Welches facility in April. The Hoodland clinic was among three Adventist rural clinics statewide that closed in the last month, with officials saying they weren’t able to staff the facilities adequately.

    The Olin Y. Bignall Aquatic Center will be completely demolished and the site readied for potential redevelopment by the end of April, according to Sandy Parks and Recreation Department officials. The pool facility was slated for demolition by the city council, but elected officials opted not to replace it with a new aquatic center, citing cost as the reason.

    Sue Ellen White has fond childhood memories of her time spent in the old growth forest around the Welches, Oregon cabin that her grandparents built during the Great Depression as an escape from city life in Portland. Completed in 1931, the cabin is located near the Salmon River and sits on two and a half forested acres that White would explore as a child.
