Riley Gaines, an advocate for women’s sports and former competitive swimmer, came to Oakland University on April 15 to speak against transgender women competing in women’s sports. Like with conservative speaker, Chloe Cole’s visit, police officers and protestors descended onto campus — as well as a divided student body. “Gaines became widely known for speaking out against transgender women competing in women’s sports,” the Network of Enlightened Women at OU (NeW) said in their event description.

On April 8, the Founders Ballrooms hosted a networking dinner and fashion show where students could practice their networking skills and refine their professional presentation at social events. The Career and Life Design Center’s Etiquette Mixer also featured a fashion show with examples of appropriate, fun and funny outfits to wear to the office.

With the help of Sabin, a Drag Queen host at Oakland University for 13 years, the Oakland Center submerged itself in the 20th edition of the Annual Drag Show. With an under-the-sea theme, SAGE welcomed 10 drag performers — professional and amateur, new and known — to celebrate a now traditional show at OU on March 25. “My favorite part, for sure, was the decorations,” Claire Childers, SAGE president, said.

During the March Oakland University Student Congress (OUSC) meetings, the Student Activities Funding Board (SAFB) proposed a bill to separate from OUSC, aimed at increasing their efficiency and autonomy. “The relationship between the University Student Congress and the Student Activities Funding Board as it is written in the Constitution reflects antiquated needs of the SAFB that are no longer existent,” the SAFB E-Board said in the proposed bill.

Punk, hardcore and metal took over The Habitat during the 2025 edition of SPB’s Battle of the Bands. The high-energy indie bands had the audience hardcore dancing and praising guitar solos on the night of March 20. Out of the six bands competing, Darkhawk — a J-opo-inspired metal band with female vocal screams and heavy breakdowns — emerged as the winning band, taking $300 dollars home and securing a spot at WXOU’s birthday bash party.

After three years of discussions, Oakland University’s Student Congress (OUSC) passed a bill that will increase Club Sports’ funding from the current annual average of $50,000 to a projected $98,000. The bill still awaits the student body’s majority vote and the Board of Trustees’ approval.

The Engineering Center is preparing for one of the biggest STEM events of the semester; GrizzHacks. The hackathon is a 24-hour engineering marathon to craft a STEM project with friends. Starting on March 22 at 10 a.m. and ending at 3 p.m., March 23, the EC will keep its doors open for anyone with innovative ideas, an interest in sharpening their STEM skills or a regular tech lover. A packed ballroom at the Oakland Center awaited the visit of two owls in silence. Students and staff lined the tables and walls of the room to meet Rito and Sam, the nocturnal educational ambassadors. After the event was initially postponed due to winter weather on March 4, two owls visited University grounds to teach students about the importance of local wildlife. The event hosted by the Ecology Club in collaboration with the Stage Nature Center proved popular and impressive for students.

Ramadan 2025 began on Feb. 28, based on the Islamic lunar cycle, and the Saudi Students Association (SSA) hosted a celebration to welcome the holy month of fasting. On Mar. 7, the Oakland Center Banquet Rooms became a place of prayer, directed by Brother Edrees Alhawsawi, breaking the fast and sharing a meal with the Oakland community.
