That exhibition by Dan Moore last night deserves a new award. His absolute lack of effort in obstructing, let alone blocking, Pratt single-handedly blew up the 4th & inches play. For Pittsburgh, it was a favorable front seven alignment to successfully execute that play call.

This is an example of coaches outsmarting themselves in practice. They assume probability and analytics will play out to their advantage so they teach techniques accordingly. But relying on panic or ill-preparedness by elite opposing QBs and coordinators isn’t a strategy.

This is going to hurt. Pitt’s offensive line is not very good - and has been exposed more and more each week - but it just got a lot worse with this news. On a positive note, we knew Pitt’s O-Line was bad but, wow, Syracuse’s line is worse.

Cal’s defense is pretty good. They’re big, fundamentally sound, disguise coverages well and don’t miss tackles. The problem with Pitt’s offense - the offensive line - is glaring and won’t improve let alone get fixed this year. It will be fixed in the 2025 transfer portal.

It was once the coaching staff that decided who will redshirt, and in years past it was almost always either a pre-season decision on freshmen or injury driven. Now, in the last couple days, two healthy, high profile players have made their own mid-season redshirt announcements.

Pitt's offensive line is as bad as I can remember it ever being. The offense actually scores in spite of that group. They have terrible feet, take downs off, are not strong enough to neutralize bull rushes nor athletic enough to adjust to run blitzes or edge pressure.

Analytics has to a degree hijacked the game. To wit, returning kickoffs. Rather than elect a touchback every time and just take it on the 25, analytics, apparently, says the chance for a long return outweighs the downside of inevitable injuries, fumbles or penalties.

Pitt’s offensive line is still neither athletic nor strong enough. Plus Bartholomew is still a liability in the run game. Their skill players are solid so I can understand the hiring of Bell to implement a gimmicky hurry up offense to help mask the offensive line’s shortcomings.
