Due for release next week (30 April), the March quarter Consumer Price Index (CPI) figures are forecast to drop further into the Reserve Bank of Australia’s (RBA) 2–3 per cent target band. Economists from the major banks – the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA), Westpac, and NAB – have all pencilled in a rise of 0.7 per cent to 0.8 per cent in headline CPI for 1Q25, which would bring the annual inflation rate to 2.2/2.3 per cent, below the RBA’s “midpoint” range of 2.5 per cent.

The latest Labour Force figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has shown the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased to 4.1 per cent in March, slightly above the previous month’s figure of 4 per cent. Australia’s unemployment rate has sat in the narrow range of 3.9 per cent to 4.1 per cent over the last 12 months.
