The long-awaited active travel bridge in Newtown, Powys is now open for pedestrians and cyclists. Having completed all the major works, construction firm, JN Bentley, have opened the bridge allowing the local communities on both sides of the river to not only use the bridge, but also make use of the new outdoor gym installed on the Pool Road side of the river.

Over £80 million of Government funding will be invested in what the council describes as an ‘ambitious’ programme of local transport improvements across Leicester over the next five years. Leicester City Council has been allocated £59 million of Local Transport Grant funding for the four years from 2026, following the Chancellor’s 2025 Spending Review.

Council leaders in Stoke-on-Trent have agreed plans to spend £22.2 million on the roads this year. The council’s highways capital programme for 2025/26 includes a raft of schemes to upgrade individual roads and bridges, works to improve the city bus network and deal with flooding, and road safety projects near schools. Also, around £10 million will be set aside for pothole repairs and reactive maintenance on roads across Stoke-on-Trent.

In partnership with Amey and Safetytech Accelerator, North Lanarkshire Council has launched the Barriers to Decarbonising Roads Sandbox (BDRS) as part of the ADEPT Live Labs 2 programme’s Centre of Excellence for Decarbonising Roads. ADEPT Live Labs 2 is a three-year, UK-wide £30 million programme, funded by the Department for Transport, aimed at decarbonising the local highway network.
