I was invited to a swanky party at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Mayfair to celebrate the Korean-born but American-raised chef winning a Michelin star for his ‘Chef’s Table’ style restaurant Dosa. We were also introduced to his other three outlets in the hotel, including the eponymous Akira Back restaurant with its offer of a fusion of Japanese and Korean cuisine being reviewed here.

Last Updated on March 23, 2025 4.0 out of 5.0 stars When I was younger, going ‘for a Chinese’, meant eating Cantonese food from Southern China and often the Hong Kong variant of that cuisine. As with all immigrant cooking styles, the food evolved its own identity in the UK because of limited access to authentic ingredients and the conservatism of the British palate.

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock since 1970 you will be aware of the five-day Glastonbury festival held every June (apart from “fallow” years to rest the land and the organisers), near Pilton in Somerset. Glastonbury is as much a pillar of the English summer as tennis at Wimbledon or opera at Glyndebourne. It’s a white, middle-class rite of passage and an easy win for people wishing peer approval and the cultural capital that comes with the price of a ticket.
