1 INTRODUCTION The near-universal ownership of smartphones with their inbuilt cameras as well as the ready availability of affordable digital cameras has meant that there are vast amounts of photographs being captured and shared online across a range of platforms, including social media (e.g. Facebook), photography sharing websites (e.g. Flickr) as well as on dedicated citizen science initiatives (e.g. iNaturalist).
