“It’s all sex work, all the way down.”It’s a statement that you want to agree with. It’s very FEMINISM 101 ™ a la Greta Gerwig’s 2023 film, Barbie. On the surface, it’s very easy to see how someone completely removed from the reality of sex work, and being a sex worker, could arrive at this conclusion. Being a woman in a relationship with a man, especially a relationship that includes raising children, is work. Domestic labour is routinely, and inherently, devalued.

When I sat down to write this, I asked ChatGPT, “What is class drag?” It had no idea, but it did encourage me to explore other “specialised or localised contexts where the term is used.” If you Google “class drag” you get a bunch of results about drag racing and drag queens. Similar results pop up on Reddit and TikTok. I’ve always known that sex workers are pioneers of sociological theory, but now I have proof.

I’ve been considering a run for city council. I’ve tossed the idea around – beaten it into submission really – for the last 4 or 5 years, but there’s a very significant part of me that won’t let me file the paperwork. There are smaller parts of me, the part that hates being photographed, for example, involved in that hesitation but the largest part of me is that part that still feels abject terror when considering being outed as a (now former) sex worker. It’s not like it’s a secret.

Post transition to a ‘real job’, I’ve had plenty of time on my hand to think about Carol Leigh’s life and legacy and the way ‘sex work/er’ has been co-opted by outsiders. Concepts like ‘pleasure activism’ and ‘sex positivity’ have become intertwined with terminology that was created to simultaneously assert and reinforce our agency as workers, irrespective of our personal sexual proclivities. Which feels…incredibly disrespectful to her intent and her legacy.

I am not here to kink shame. As an unashamed and vocal monster fucker, it would be the height of hypocrisy to judge anyone for what tickles their tender parts. I am, however, a huge fan of asking people to think about why certain things get their engines going. There’s been a lot of discourse about raceplay and racial fetish porn in sex worker circles, but all too often it comes back to white sex workers defaulting to some variation of “Well, it pays my bills!” as an argument.

I’m not proud of it but I Google my name on the internet. Not as compulsively as before but definitely more than is a mildly curious, somewhat defensible as healthy, amount. About two and a half years ago, I told my therapist that I didn’t think I had PTSD. Cyberstalking wasn’t a catastrophic event in my life. I wasn’t suffering physical consequences from the situation. At that time, C-PTSD (Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) wasn’t in common use beyond academic circles.
