    Alexis Abramson’s first love was the study of heat—how to use it, conserve it and eliminate waste. “Everyone connects with heat in some way,” says Abramson, dean of Columbia University’s Climate School. “Yet heat is sort of the black sheep of the energy family.” We need heat for obvious reasons, and yet when we use other forms of energy like electricity, we often want to minimize waste—which means we don’t want it converting to heat unnecessarily.

    Caroline Juang uses satellite data, big datasets and statistical modeling to understand natural hazards in the context of modern climate. As a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Columbia and Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, she is currently investigating how climate affects wildfires in the western United States—prescient in the face of the recent, catastrophic Los Angeles fires.

    Some of Alexis Abramson’s earliest memories were colored by the impact of industry on the environment—namely, the polluted Cuyahoga River, which famously caught on fire near her hometown when she was young. Being a good steward of the planet became ingrained in her identity and led Abramson to a career in engineering and sustainability, and now to her new role as dean of the Climate School.
