Shahid bhai died in Australia while undergoing treatment on March 19 of this year. Many saw it coming as he had been suffering from cancer for a long time. But just because it was a matter of time doesn't make it easier to accept. His death sits heavily in many hearts. He was our senior by two years and close at several levels.

Perhaps among all the games that are played, nothing is more cerebral than cricket. It doesn't matter how many muscles ripple across your body and how many skills you have picked up at the coaching camps, in the end only the mind matters. It's a game not for just the brave or courageous animals we like to pretend we are - Tigers are often mentioned as our symbol. In the final summation, it's not exactly a matter of ferocious predators winning but the animal which is smart, cool and calm.

The Media is always in the media focus and when it's so politically involved, almost an activist media in general, this is only to be expected. Public expectation of the media's role is that of a supporter of its perceived socio-political and economic objectives hence the functional role of the media has probably transitioned into one of structural "bias" where a media unit is judged based not on its objectivity but depending on how subjective it is.

Jan 10 is a major event in the list of public events of Bangladesh history. Sk. Mujib, who was interned in Pakistan during 1971, was released after the war was over formally after the Pakistani forces surrendered on December 16. He flew into Dhaka on January 10 1972. This also meant that from December 16 to January 10, 1972, nobody was really in charge of the government.
