Kenya says all its diplomats in Israel and Iran are accounted for, but are under instructions to stay away from their offices as airstrikes between the two countries raise the stakes of war. Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei told the Nation that all the staff at the missions in Tel Aviv and Tehran are safe. But they have had to move away from their work stations. “Our team in Tehran has relocated to the border with Turkey,” he said of the Kenyan embassy in Iran.

On Friday, the world woke up to attacks launched by Israel on Iran, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu describing the precision raids on Tehran’s nuclear sites as a targeted military operation “to roll back the Iranian threat to Israel’s very survival.” The operation, he warned, could continue for as long as the threat remained. And Iran warned of a “painful” response. This war could add to a pile of conflicts that have hurt Africa in one way or another, especially the Horn of Africa.

Kenya says it intends to thrash out finer details with China financing infrastructure projects before end of June, signalling pursuit of a project seen as crucial for improving trade and transportation. Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi said he had directly appealed to Chinese counterparts to speed up the deals meant to extend the Standard Gauge Railway and widen the main highway to Malaba.

When he came to power in September 2022, few people may have known the trajectory of President William Ruto’s foreign policy, except the belief that he could stay the course of certain issues already followed by his predecessors. The Kenya Kwanza Manifesto didn’t help much and its bit on foreign policy was just a paragraph, promising to pursue economic diplomacy. Nearly three years down the line, the Kenya Kwanza administration has trialled, erred and moved.

The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) are facing accusations of targeting civilians, the same allegations that rivals at the Rapid Support Forces (RFS) have faced in the war. The junta had previously accused the RFS of atrocities. Now they may be committing the same war crimes, according to reports compiled by rights watchdogs. On Monday, a United Nations convoy was destroyed while en route to El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, which has been besieged for the last six months.
