The Chief judge of Kano State High Court, Justice Dije Abdu Aboki, has fixed October 10, 2024 for ruling on interlocutory application seeking to restrain the 15th Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado-Bayero, from renovating Nassarawa mini palace where he has been staying since his return to Kano after dissolution of emirates in May.

Former governor of Kano state, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, says he had no money to buy governorship nomination forms for the 2003 election and had to obtain loan to buy the form fixed at N5 million naira at the time. He said it was the late elder statesman, Malam Magaji Danbatta, then chairman of Kano Forum whom he approached and got a loan of N1 million from.

Two courts in Kano State have issued conflicting interim injunctions on the Kano Emirate tussle. Justice S. A. Amobeda of the Federal High Court in Kano on Tuesday ordered the eviction of the reinstated emir, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II from Gidan Rumfa palace. However, Justice Amina Adamu Aliyu of Kano State High Court issued a separate order, restraining the police, the State Security Services (SSS) and the Nigerian Army from evicting, harassing or arresting Sanusi.

Justice Muhammad Nasir Yunusa of the Federal High Court in Kano State has convicted and sentenced one Okey Okosa (61) for being in possession of 2.3 grams of cocaine. Okasa pleaded guilty to the one-count charge preferred against him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). His lawyer, Charles Asoquos pleaded with the judge to temper justice with mercy, saying the convict got the cocaine for his personal use and not for sale to other end-users.

The Kano State High Court, which initially granted an ex-parte order affirming the suspension of the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has vacated the order. The presiding judge, Justice Usman Na'Abba, who gave the April 17 order affirming Ganduje's suspension, yesterday granted another interim order staying execution of the earlier order. Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has pledged improved electricity supply in Kano, Jigawa and Katsina state during the month of Ramadan following introduction of a discount promo of 10% for the duration in efforts to ease the economic burden on customers while settling their electricity obligations. The discount scheme provides 10% discount for non-maximum demand (NMD) post-paid and prepaid customers for vending (and subsequent billing) this month.

Truck drivers yesterday blocked the Kano-Zaria highway around Kwanar Dawaki causing traffic gridlock. Travellers and motorists spent hours in the gridlock that extended close to Tamburawa Bridge. An eye witness who preferred not be named said an encounter involving a truck driver and customs operatives led to the incident. He said the customs officers were chasing the driver of a truck suspected to be loaded with contraband goods when one of them shot the truck tyre forcing the driver to stop.

The Kano State House of Assembly yesterday passed for second reading a bill seeking to compel intending couples to undergo HIV, hepatitis as well as sickle cell screening before marriage. Musa Ali Kachako (Takai constituency), who sponsored the bill, said in his lead debate that the state had been battling with different health issues including HIV because people go into marriages without medical screening.
