Vanuit zijn nieuwe huis in Heerenveen denkt Omar Ayoub vaak terug aan zijn oude huis in Syrië. Het staat vlak bij de oude bazaar van de provinciestad Rastan. Het heeft twee verdiepingen, negen kamers en grenst aan een tuin met palmbomen en cipressen. „Als kind speelde ik in die tuin met de kinderen uit de buurt”, zegt Ayoub, een 40-jarige Syriër die in 2014 naar Nederland vluchtte. Het huis in Rastan is van zijn vader, die het weer van zijn grootvader erfde.
