    In early October, Bellingcat’s Tech team organised its second ever in-person hackathon, this time in Naryn, Kyrgyzstan with the theme “Visualising Nature’s Stories”. This student-only hackathon, in collaboration with the University of Central Asia, saw 30 participants from three international universities in Kyrgyzstan put their heads together to brainstorm ways to communicate one of the most urgent issues of the region.

By following the steps outlined below, Bellingcat helped establish that in 2023 Dženis Kadrić was renting a Dubai property owned by Candido Nsue Okomo the brother-in-law of Equatorial Guinea’s President. This was later confirmed by documentation obtained by investigative partners.

    Last week, the River Ural burst its banks in Russia’s Orenburg Region in what officials have called the worst floods in a century. Russian authorities have evacuated tens of thousands of residents when floodwaters submerged cities such as Orsk, as seen in satellite imagery tasked by Bellingcat. Climate experts told Reuters the deluge was caused by heavy snowfall followed by a swift rise in temperatures.

    Floodwaters continue to rise in Russia’s Orenburg Region after dams burst along the River Ural earlier this week. According to the region’s governor, the water levels in its capital city Orenburg have risen to more than ten metres. The region’s second largest city of Orsk has been particularly badly struck by the floods. A small number of residents took to the streets on Monday in a rare protest against the government.

    A group of policemen in body armour and helmets burst into a mosque during prayer, released tear gas and shoved men, women and children to the ground. This event in the Moscow suburb of Kotelniki in July was widely reported in the Russian press. The disturbing footage was first shared on a popular xenophobic Telegram channel. It was one of dozens of raids targeting migrant workers in Russia this year.
