I will never stop crying about the final story I tell in Becoming the Pastor’s Wife. It is the story we used to frame our All The Buried Women podcast miniseries, too. It encapsulates why I am doing this work. It is for the women like Maria who have been forgotten by the history of our churches; the women whose voices have been taken away by our theologies and practices that privilege male power at the cost of women. Thank you, Savannah Locke, for helping me tell these stories.

Reposted with Aimee Byrd’s permission. (Thanks Aimee.)I remember well when it hit me—that Jesus was completely missing. I felt the darkness. Matt and I just returned to the car after attending a regional meeting full of church officers in what is now our former denomination. We watched pastors and elders wearing their authority like costumes, parading around as if they were lawyers, debating the Book of Church Order, deciding the fate of my church leaders.

By Aimee Byrd, used with permissionHave you ever been unable to enjoy a favorite food anymore because you vomited after having it once? The food may have had nothing to do with the sickness. It’s that whole correlation doesn’t equal causation thing—the food is now so associated with the nastiness of the encounter. You tasted it the second time, and now know of its ability to turn in your guts, haunt you by its presence, sour, work against your digestive flow, and stink.

Many of us grow up in the church and still don't know what healthy discipleship is supposed to look like. Does discipleship mean serving in the important church programs? Knowing the right theology? Having the perfect family and the right friends? Living a moral life? Having it all together? Defeating our besetting sins? Becoming a leader? These are all tempting ways to try to succeed in the Christian life because we can deceive ourselves into thinking they are measurable.

Why do so many go through the motions of church life, often falling short of entering and living in the world of new life in Christ with all our senses? Why do we struggle to be known? Shame isn’t only something we experience from others. We are pretty good at shaming ourselves. Shame tells a tale about your value.

We want a kind of love that sees us in our most vulnerable condition—soul-naked—and embraces us.
