Russia’s foreign ministry said in a statement that Bashar Al-Assad decided to step down as Syrian president and left his country. Sunday’s statement marks the first time Moscow commented on Assad’s whereabouts, which remained unknown since rebels took over Syrian capital, Damascus, earlier in the day.

Somewhere off the coast of Eritrea on July 20th last year, the Vernadsky Prospect — stocked with 730,000 barrels of Russian crude — started broadcasting a message: “Armed guard on board.” The 250-meter long tanker had just passed through the Suez Canal, midway through its 7,400 nautical mile journey from the Russian port of Primorsk to India, one of the few major economies that continues to buy Russian oil following its invasion of Ukraine.

Egypt is struggling to complete a large purchase of Russian wheat that was due to be loaded this month, raising questions about the dealmaking between two of the largest players in the market. One of the world’s biggest wheat buyers, Egypt last month said it purchased 430,000 tonsBloomberg Terminal from top-exporter Russia. Shipment was planned for October, with delivery no later than the first week of November, according to the state buyer.

The cost of insuring vessels that transit Ukraine’s shipping corridor in the Black Sea jumped this week after Russia ramped up attacks on key ports. Coverage has now surged to above 1% of the value of a ship, according to two people involved in the market, who asked not to be named because the information isn’t public. That’s up from around 0.75% last week. For a $50 million ship, that would be an increase of $125,000 per voyage.
