With 2024 on track to being the warmest year on record, can it turn cold enough for snow next week? ITV meteorologist Aisling Creevey assesses the chances. After some windy weather from Storm Ashley in early September, it has been a quiet autumn. Day and night temperatures have remained above average so there has been very little frost and plenty of guaranteed dry weather.

Storm Ashley is expected to impact Northern Ireland and is the first named storm of the 2024/2025 storm season. Storm Ashley coincides with a period of exceptionally high spring tides which means coastal flooding and large waves are a risk. There will be strong winds of 50-60mph but along the coast, wind gusts could reach up to 70mph. This strength of wind could bring down trees, branches or power lines and in any rainfall will make driving conditions difficult due to poor visibility.

The Met Office have issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms for today. A separate thunderstorm warning has also been issued for Saturday and another warning has been issued for heavy rain on Sunday. Currently a focus for the bad weather is across Bedford, Hertfordshire and Luton as well as Milton Keynes.

Thursday 20 June 2024 at 2:36pmThe summer solstice marks the longest day of the year and it also marks the beginning of astronomical summer. In the northern hemisphere, the solstice marks the point where the Earth's tilt towards the sun is at a maximum. This means that the sun appears at its highest elevation, making it the longest day of the year. The solstice actually marks a moment in time but we tend to refer to think of the solstice as the whole day.
