The avian flu has been detected on 30 dairy farms and infected 2 people in Michigan so far this year. The USDA is mandating tests of raw milk, as well as requiring farmers and local labs to report infected animals. It's a part of a larger effort to detect animals with H5N1 and slow the spread of the disease. Phil Durst is a dairy expert with Michigan State University Extension. He says the testing requirements will provide new insight to how many farms are currently infected.

This year, Michigan's hunters harvested over 134-thousand deer over the November firearms period. That's just over 2,300 less than last year. State officials have been trying to recruit new hunters through events and extending hunting periods. This is part of an effort to help manage the growth of the herd. Chad Stewart is a deer specialist for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. He says recruitment efforts can only go so far to combat growing disinterest in hunting.

Trump cited concerns over illegal immigration and Fentanyl trafficking as the reason for the tariffs. Bruce Burrows is the CEO of the Chamber of Marine Commerce, a group representing Canadian and American shipping stakeholders. He says the new tariffs might hurt Agriculture companies he represents on both sides of the border. "They manufacture products that they sell to the American consumer. And if their input costs go up by 25 percent then that's gonna be passed on very quickly to the US consumer.

When it comes to having more than one chronic condition, Michigan's women ranked in the bottom 10 states. They received a similar ranking for excessive drinking. The state also ranks among the worst 15 states in terms of women and children in poverty. Leanne Espinoza is with the L-M-A-S District Health Department, which serves the Eastern U-P. She says policy solutions, like Flint's plan to give cash payments to new mothers, can help alleviate negative outcomes.

"Democratic Representative Dan Kildee of Flint says the Canadian Government plans to store high-level nuclear waste in Ontario. These potential sites would be roughly 155 miles north of Lake Superior and around 25 miles east of Lake Huron, according to Canadian officials. Kildee says Canada's plan poses a threat to the Great Lakes.
