PHILADELPHIA – The Columbus Blue Jackets had something to play for. The Flyers didn’t. That situation might have had a big impact on Tuesday night’s home season finale for the Flyers. Columbus kept its slim playoff hopes alive with a 3-0 victory at the Wells Fargo Center. Meanwhile, the Flyers were just playing out the string. They finished the season with a 20-20-1 mark on home ice, a place where they’re supposed to have some kind of an advantage. Goaltender Sam Ersson was the tough luck loser.

PHILADELPHIA – The votes are in and there weren’t a whole lot of surprises for the Flyers end-of-season awards on Tuesday night. Leading scorer Travis Konecny captured the Bobby Clarke Trophy as the team’s most valuable player. Travis Sanheim won his third Barry Ashbee Trophy (most outstanding defenseman) and the Yanick Dupre Class Guy Memorial Award for the Flyer who best illustrates character, dignity and respect for hockey both on and off the ice.

VOORHEES, N.J. – With just four games left on the Flyers’ schedule, just how important is it for the veteran players to set a good example for the young guys? Very. That’s been evident since the Flyers were eliminated from playoff consideration and really have nothing left to play for except maybe some positions which might be considered up in the air for next season. A good example of this was Wednesday night’s game in New York. The match started off with a lot of structure and disciplined play.

It’s challenging enough just working out on a StairMaster for more than an hour. But can you imagine how difficult it would be if you threw on about 45 pounds of a typical firefighter’s outfit and attempted to simulate the 1,368 feet of climb to the top of the original World Trade Center towers? NEW YORK – If getting named to Canada’s roster for the 4-Nations Face-Off tournament back in February didn’t confirm this is Travis Konecny’s best season to date, Wednesday’s announcement he will be playing in the upcoming IIHF World Championships tournament in May probably will. The Flyers’ right wing will finish his ninth NHL season with career highs in assists and points. He’s been one of the few bright spots for Philadelphia in an otherwise disappointing season.

When Peter Lederer finished the 2024 Boston Marathon on a leg and a prayer, it was safe to surmise the worst was behind him. But not so fast there, race afficionados. What happened in late April – Lederer completing the 26.2-mile test with a stress fracture in his hip – was just the beginning of an injury-related journey much longer and more challenging than the trek through Beantown.

VOORHEES, N.J. – As Wednesday’s practice came to a close, in a typical Flyers’ tradition, the players formed a circle at center ice and kneeled to honor one special individual. In this case it was new teammate Karsen Dorwart, who signed a contract out of Michigan State University last weekend. While the ritual happens at the Flyers Training Center every once in a while, this one was somewhat unique because it involved an undrafted player who’s making the jump right out of college to the NHL.

PHILADELPHIA – With each passing game under new interim head coach Brad Shaw, the Flyers look a little more sure of themselves. Maybe it’s because they look a bit more relaxed and they’re having fun. Granted, the competition has not been powerhouse but a win is a win and the Flyers have three of those on the way to a 3-0 mark since Shaw took over for John Tortorella last Thursday.

PHILADELPHIA – Whether the presence of Garnet Hathaway would have made a difference when the Flyers were still somewhat in a playoff chase a month ago probably would be considered doubtful at best. But just having the tough guy back in the lineup for Monday night’s game against Nashville must have added some good feeling to the Flyers locker room as the season draws to a close. Hathaway suffered an upper-body injury in a game at Pittsburgh back on Feb.

PHILADELPHIA – Lots of times in awards voting, it’s not how you start a season, it’s how you finish. In Matvei Michkov’s case, he’s trying to follow that formula to possibly become the first Flyer to ever win an NHL rookie of the year award. On Saturday afternoon, Michkov scored twice for the second consecutive game to lead the Flyers to a 7-4 win over the Buffalo Sabres at the Wells Fargo Center.
