    Former Seattle city councilmember Kshama Sawant announced Monday that she will run for Congress, KING 5 reports. Sawant, who is also a socialist activist, will challenge incumbent Rep. Adam Smith, a Democrat, for the District 9 seat. According to the Seattle Times, Sawant served as a city councilmember from 2014 to 2023. She fought for policies like increasing the minimum wage, rent control and taxing large corporations operating in Seattle to fund social services.

    Vietnamese American Jaylin Williams is headed to the NBA finals. Williams is a forward for the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Thunder will face the Indiana Pacers in the finals. The 22-year-old grew up in Fort Smith, Arkansas. He played college basketball for two years at the University of Arkansas before entering the 2022 NBA draft. He was selected by the Thunder at the 34th pick. Williams’ mother Linda is Vietnamese.

    San Francisco’s Chinatown hosted its first-ever in-person Pride event on Saturday. According to ABC 7 San Francisco, hundreds gathered in the city’s Chinatown neighborhood to celebrate Pride. The event took place on a block of Grant street. There were vendors, food, music, traditional lion dancers and a parade. “I think every neighborhood is starting to have a little Pride celebration, and I think there’s enough Pride to go around,” Estee Longah told KTVU.

    Four Asian Americans were among the eight people deported to South Sudan. According to ABC News, the Department of Homeland Security confirmed that eight immigrants were placed on a flight in Texas that left for South Sudan on Monday. Among those eight men were four Asian Americans: Thongxay Nilakout, Laos; Nyo Myint, Burma; Tuan Thanh Phan, Vietnam; and Kyaw Mya, Burma. The other four men were from Cuba, Mexico and South Sudan.
