Madison Opera will debut its first-ever production of Maria de Buenos Aires this Friday at the Overture Center for the Arts. Maria de Buenos Aires was first produced at the theater Sala La Planeta in Buenos Aires in 1968. It was composed by Astor Piazzolla with a libretto by Horacio Ferre.

One day inspired the newest exhibition at the Chazen Museum: ‘You Belong Here: Place People, and Purpose in Latinx Photography’ — May 10, 1974. On that day, a woman named Dolores in Dallas, Texas, visited her grandfather, bringing a tray with her. Her grandfather was bedridden by his age and illness, and the woman was bringing his lunch. Dolores would happily tell him the good news — she was pregnant. Her grandfather cried with happiness before eating his meal.

The City of Madison Arts Commission announced the launch of its new arts commissioning system on Jan. 21 — a database of artwork prequalified for use in public infrastructure projects. It allows for any artist in or outside of Madison to submit an existing art of theirs to the city’s arts commission on any topic and medium, primarily 2D and 3D artwork — including sculpture, paintings, prints, photos and other media.

Whitney Biennial, one of the most prestigious art exhibitions in the United States, announced its curators for the 2026 exhibition in early August — University of Wisconsin alumni Drew Sawyer and Marcela Guerrero. Jill Casid, who is a professor of visual studies at UW and Guerrero’s mentor, commented on the specialty of the nomination. “I don’t know of another Whitney Biennial that has had curators who were both trained, at least in part, at the same institution,” Casid said.

In the Christmas of 1934, a story reached 200 doorsteps of families and friends printed out onto 24-page unremarkable pamphlets. Almost a century later, there is never a Christmas without someone somewhere watching the story immortalized as the film “It’s a Wonderful Life.”This Christmas season, Capital City Theatre premiers its new production of “It’s a Wonderful Life” at Madison College’s Mitby Theater.

A disguised count, a know-it-all barber, an old wretched man and a young passionate woman locked in her house. Together these witty characters, amongst others, create what is well-known on the opera stages as “The Barber of Seville” or the “useless precaution” by the 19th-century author Gioachino Rossini. This year’s Madison Opera debuted its 2024 season with the well-known classic starring David Walton as Count Almaviva and Keely Flutterer as Rosina, the two lovers.

Beginning with a thundering bang of lightning, Manual Cinema recreates English novelist Mary Shelly’s well-known gothic horror, Frankenstein. Perfect for the Halloween season, the show embraced Shelly’s 1800s prometheus with live animation filling the stage with puppeteers, pianos, clarinets, flutes and an array of musical instruments.

Tandem Press’ “Where My Girls At?” exhibition opened Oct. 4 at the Tandem Press headquarters. Named after a piece by Derrick Adams by the same name, it showcases the works of print artists from across the country and their diverse perspectives of the world. Director of Tandem Press since May, Katie Geha sheds light on the gallery and its inner workings.
