Op-ed What's been happening since the start of this week? Almost every day there has been chaos, clashes and conflict. On Sunday and Monday, clashes among the students of various colleges had transformed Old Dhaka and Jatrabari into a battlefield. A large part of Old Dhaka including Lakshmibazar and Johnson Road was blocked. On Monday the Demra part of Dhaka-Sylhet highway was blocked for a long span of time. Many educational institutions and a hospital were attacked in these two days.

Who are in the political arena? There is the Students against Discrimination Movement who led the mass uprising and their associate bodies. They are new in the political field, but wield the most influence. It is still not clear what they want to do politically, how far they want to go. Then there is BNP, anticipating ascension to power with the exit of Awami League. They are a big party that has struggled for 16 years against Awami League’s rule, facing all sorts of suppression and repression.

Opinion There is always the risk of a counter-revolution after a revolution. The question is, did a revolution take place on 5 August in Bangladesh? Many refer to the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government as the August Revolution. But the changes that take place in a government and state after a revolution, did not take place. In that sense, it is difficult to dub this change as a 'revolution'. Also, the government that took over after the fall of Sheikh Hasina is not a 'revolutionary government'.
