This story was originally published in November 2014. June 5 is Henry Johnson Day in Albany. Nominations for the city's annual Henry Johnson Award are open for 2024. This year, an individual will receive the award on Sept. 14 at the Riverfront Jazz Festival. The popular story of Henry Johnson, Albany’s World War I hero, goes something like this: Johnson was a railroad porter who enlisted in the black regiment that came to be known as the Harlem Hellfighters.

The Dfdaa family’s first impression of the Capital Region was formed in a grocery store. Arriving as refugees in June 2023, the Syrian family of five spent their first few days miserable in an Albany Motel 6. They’d just arrived in the U.S., and the unfamiliarity of it all was overwhelming. “So lonely — like, ‘OK, what did we just do to ourselves?’ ” said Salama Alkhurboutli, speaking through an interpreter.

Ana Banda-Wemple never planned on leaving Lima, Peru. But love had other ideas. In December 1984, Banda-Wemple — back then, just Ana Cecilia Banda — was a college student. She was on a train from Cusco to Machu Picchu when the cars rolled to a halt and the static-fuzzed PA system announced a nationwide rail stoppage in support of train workers’ rights.

“I came from Brazil, a very tropical country, and people normally ask me, ‘What are you doing in upstate New York? ’” Nubia Goncalves said with a laugh. “I say, ‘I love it — I just love it.’ ”The Capital Region is where Goncalves first settled in the U.S., and she liked it so much here she stayed — though that wasn’t the way she had planned it. “My brother used to live here, in Schenectady, so I came to live with him,” the Latham resident said.
