    When I was in college (too many years ago to count) I had a friend who was perpetually angry. He was known for marking the walls of the upper floors of the Student Center with four letters of graffiti. They were “TINJ,” which meant “There Is No Justice.”When a complicated racehorse handicapping situation gets even more complicated, I am tempted to write those infamous four letters across my racing form.

    The date was November 10th, 1984. The Breeders’ Cup had its first running at the now-defunct Hollywood Park. The purpose of the event was to create a true end-of-season national championship event for thoroughbred racing. It would serve the sport nationally, rather than continuing what some perceived as an East Coast bias. In the older male horse division, for example, it was frequently the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park that would be a main determinant of a national championship.

    My mission in this column is to examine the Dimitry Bivol-Artur Beterbiev fight with an eye toward its historical importance. The simple way to begin and end the historical significance discussion would be to say this is the one and only time in the four-belt era that we have a fight for the undisputed light heavyweight title.  So, that’s that. Right? Well, I probably owe the editors Ring Magazine and more importantly all of you maybe a little more nuance than that.
